Use your code books and write your reasoning before opening the walkthrough. This exercise contains no real patient information.
Office treatment
Fictional adult receives an ordered single-drug therapeutic infusion in a physician office. Assume the applicable initial infusion service, medical necessity and all other reporting conditions are met. No chemotherapy, hydration or second-drug administration occurs.
Administration record
The drug starts at 09:20 and stops at 10:40. The record confirms uninterrupted administration for that interval. The nurse documents completion and later observes the patient before discharge at 11:05. The observation period contains no further infusion.
Draft units
The draft assigns the initial service plus an additional-hour unit because the appointment exceeded an hour. The actual infusion lasts 80 minutes. The additional 25 minutes before discharge are observation, not continued drug administration.
Coding task
Apply the cited physician additional-hour instruction. This exercise assumes the applicable timed infusion family and asks only whether an additional hour is established. It does not authorize selecting an infusion entry from time alone when the drug or method is unknown.
Your coding worksheet
- Calculate the actual infusion duration.
- Separate observation from infusion time.
- Evaluate the additional-hour unit.
- State the additional-time threshold.
In your notebook, record the supported facts, your index route, the instructions you checked, and any missing detail that limits your answer.
Compare with the worked explanation
- 09:20 through10:40 is80 minutes.
- The later25 minutes do not extend the documented infusion.
- Only20 minutes extend beyond the first hour, so the additional-hour threshold is not met.
- The cited instruction requires more than 30 minutes beyond the hour increment.
