Start with the service date

This course's coding window is July 1 through September 30, 2026. The manual reviewed here is the July 1, 2026 edition. MDHHS incorporates policy bulletins quarterly, so check effective bulletins issued after that edition as well. A publication date does not necessarily govern every section inside a bulletin. For example, MMP 26-31 was issued July 31 but contains several effective dates, including a correction applying from January 1. Read the section for the actual service. [mi-code-update-2631]

Build a policy note

Use a fictional chart to practice this sequence:

1. Record the service date, actual setting and performed work.

2. Identify the program and organization administering that particular benefit.

3. Find the general, specialty and billing sections in the manual.

4. Check later effective bulletins and relevant clarifications.

5. Confirm provider, coverage and authorization requirements.

6. Explain the coding conclusion separately from the payment question.

Keep the common boundaries clear

A valid national code does not establish state coverage for every provider group. An authorization request is not an approval, and an approval does not guarantee eligibility or payment.
