The official CPC exam contains 100 multiple-choice questions, allows four hours in one sitting and requires 70 correct answers to pass. AAPC offers at-home remote proctoring and computer testing at a testing center. Understand the clock before trying to beat it

Four hours is 240 minutes. Dividing by 100 gives an average of 2.4 minutes per question. That is arithmetic, not a promise that each question deserves the same time. A short terminology item and a complete operative record can require different amounts of work.

Choose a rehearsal plan with time for review. One course exercise is to allow about 210 minutes for an initial pass and preserve roughly 30 minutes for flagged items. Try that plan during practice and adjust it from your actual results. It is a suggested study technique, not an AAPC instruction.

At intervals, compare your answered count with the remaining time. If you are far behind, identify the cause. Repeatedly searching broad terms, rereading an entire chart without a question in mind or refusing to leave one uncertain lookup can consume time without improving the answer.

Do not abandon verification just to match an average. Instead, make the next lookup more specific: identify the service family, the fact that distinguishes the choices and the instruction that needs confirmation.

Use flags for a reason

On the first pass, answer questions you can support. When a choice remains uncertain, use the flag and move on with a specific reason to return. In your ordinary practice notebook, that reason might be “verify laterality” or “check the included-service note.” The actual exam's allowed writing tools and materials must be checked separately.

A flag is useful when it preserves a decision point. Flagging nearly every question gives you a second full examination to complete at the end. During rehearsal, distinguish a genuine unresolved instruction from ordinary discomfort with a difficult subject.

When you return, read the question's requested task again. Does it ask for the diagnosis, the service, a modifier or the best next documentation step? A correct fact about the chart can still be the wrong answer to the task being asked.

Make a mock attempt interpretable

Choose a curated 100-question mock and use the books you intend to rely on. Avoid the worked explanations, search engines and outside help during the timed attempt. In this course, the simulation clock continues across navigation or reload; reopening the page does not grant another four hours. Review unanswered and flagged items before submission.

Record any interruption that made the session unlike a full rehearsal. Do not compare a session with extensive outside help to an independent first attempt as though they measured the same thing. If access needs call for a different practice arrangement, use the course's untimed modes and seek the actual exam accommodation process before scheduling.

The three curated mocks have separate question sets. Repeating a familiar mock can help you review a rule, but the course uses each mock's first submitted attempt for its independent readiness evidence. A later high score on remembered questions does not replace that first result.

Read the result as a worklist

Begin with the missed and guessed answers, including those you happened to get right. For each, name the decisive fact and read the linked rationale. Return to the lesson and official instruction when the explanation does not yet make sense.

Group the work by cause. A calculation mistake needs a different drill from confusion about anatomy. A correct diagnosis with the wrong sequence needs instruction review. A familiar procedure with a missed inclusion may need a full chart exercise rather than another flashcard.

Then complete a fresh mixed set. If the same distinction still causes errors, return to the concept before taking another full mock. This cycle is the course's study method; the score is useful because it helps you choose what to do next.

Use the higher course standard honestly

The dashboard separates the official passing rule from this course's recommendation. The course asks for all lesson and checkpoint work, at least 70% in every tested domain, at least 80% across 100 recent distinct questions, two distinct first-attempt full mocks at 80% or higher, one at 85% or higher, and a qualifying full timed performance within four hours. Case performance is also required.

Untested topics are not treated as mastered. The course's readiness band is a study recommendation, not a certification prediction or a promise about your real score. Review the individual requirements rather than treating one label as a substitute for judgment.

Finish the written capstone as well. The local completion certificate identifies only this independent course; it does not award CPC, AAPC CEUs or apprentice-removal credit.

Confirm the appointment and its real cost

Check the current AAPC purchase and scheduling instructions for your intended exam. AAPC requires active membership, and its current pricing help separates membership from the exam voucher. Prepare for your chosen delivery method

For a U.S. testing-center appointment, check the exact name match between your registration and valid government-issued photo ID, and bring the required printed confirmation or admission ticket. The published guidance excludes temporary, paper, copied and digital IDs for this setting. At home, use AAPC's current setup guidance and complete the provider's system test on the actual computer, connection and external webcam you will use. The camera must show the required workspace. For either delivery method, confirm the current break, check-in and accommodation instructions with the provider. Do not import rules from an older paper examination or assume an accommodation is arranged because this website has accessible controls.

Inspect the references you will actually use

AAPC permits the approved print or platform eBook format, with one format chosen for the required books. Finalize that choice at least 48 hours before the exam. Current-year books are recommended; the approved print guidance also permits the immediately preceding year's editions. Book drill

Choose five earlier questions from different domains. Before opening a book, name the likely section and the decisive lookup. Complete each verification and record where time was lost. Improve one navigation habit, then try five different questions. Do not transfer copied questions into your exam books.

Explain why a repeated mock score differs from a first attempt, calculate the 2.4-minute overall average and describe what you would do when a lookup is taking too long.
